After breakfast at your riad, your driver will pick you up at 8:30 a.m. in a comfortable vehicle and begin the journey toward Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. You will visit this iconic site with a local guide. Ait Ben Haddou is the most famous kasbah in Morocco, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has served as a filming location for numerous international movies.
From there, the route continues to the Skoura Oasis, where you can enjoy a walk through vast palm groves and visit the fortified Kasbah Amredhil. The journey then follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through Kelâa M’Gouna and the Valley of the Roses. In this area, you may visit a local cosmetic cooperative to learn how roses are transformed into perfumes and beauty products.
After lunch, the drive continues off-road, offering a closer look at daily life in the oases and revealing ever-changing landscapes. Along the way, you will stop at caves used by Berber nomads who seasonally inhabit the area. You will be welcomed to share a glass of tea with them before continuing toward the Dades Gorges.
Upon arrival in the Dades Valley, there will be time to walk through the area and stroll among fields and gardens. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be in a hotel or traditional kasbah.
After breakfast, the journey continues toward the Dades Gorges, where you can enjoy a relaxed walk along the river and through the surrounding scenery. You then travel back down the valley to rejoin the main road toward Tinghir. Heading north once again, you arrive at the impressive Todgha Gorges, where a short walk takes you between towering canyon walls carved by the river.
The route then leads toward the Erg Chebbi dunes via Tinjdad, with a stop along the way for lunch. As you continue toward Erfoud, you will notice unusual sand mounds lining the roadside. These mark the entrances to the khettarat, an ancient underground irrigation system designed to reduce water evaporation in the desert climate. You may descend into one of these channels to feel the cool air below and admire this remarkable feat of traditional engineering.
Passing through the lush Oasis of Tafilalt, you reach Erfoud, a town renowned for its fossil workshops, where you can discover locally crafted fossil artifacts. From here, the drive continues east to Merzouga, where drifting sand along the road announces your arrival at the edge of the Sahara Desert.
Upon arrival at the desert camp, you will be welcomed with mint tea before setting off on a camel ride to the top of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Watching the sun set over the endless waves of golden sand is an unforgettable experience.
In the evening, enjoy dinner beneath a sky filled with stars, accompanied by traditional Berber music and drumming around the campfire. You will spend the night in a comfortable desert camp featuring private bathrooms, spacious beds, and carefully chosen Moroccan décor that enhances the peaceful beauty of the Sahara.
Rising early offers the chance to witness a breathtaking sunrise, as shifting shadows and changing colors transform the dunes into a truly magical scene. After breakfast, you have time to stroll among the dunes and fully enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this extraordinary landscape.
Later, the journey continues south toward Zagora, the largest oasis in the Drâa Valley and a historic gateway to the vast Sahara Desert. The drive follows the Saghro Mountains, passing through traditional Berber villages such as Rissani, Alnif, and Tazarine, which appeared in the film Babel. You arrive in N’Qob around midday, where there is time to stop for lunch.
From N’Qob, you travel along an ancient caravan route, crossing ever-changing scenery and charming Berber villages. By late afternoon, you reach Zagora, where you settle into a welcoming guesthouse. Dinner and overnight accommodation are provided, allowing you to relax and prepare for the next stage of your journey.
After breakfast, you head south to the village of Tamgroute to visit its renowned Quranic Library and the traditional green pottery workshops. This distinctive pottery is highly prized throughout southern Morocco and can also be found in the medinas of Marrakech, Rabat, and Fes.
On the return journey toward Ouarzazate, you travel north through the Drâa Valley, following sections of the ancient caravan route off-road. This scenic drive offers a closer look at vast palm groves, fortified kasbahs, and lush oases. Along the way, you stop at panoramic viewpoints to take photos and enjoy short walks.
At the northern end of the Drâa Valley, you visit the historic Kasbah Tamnougalte with a local guide, where lunch is also planned. In the afternoon, the journey continues back to Ouarzazate, crossing the Anti-Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-n-Tinfifite pass.
Upon arrival, your driver will transfer you to your hotel, marking the end of your Ouarzazate desert journey to the Erg Chebbi dunes.
